The focus of this presentation is to show researchers how to effectively browse the historical collections on FamilySearch, how to use the catalog to find digital collections not found in the historical record collections, and how to use the research Wiki to identify and find online and local record collections from various repositories. This lecture will help attendees learn tricks for finding their family in the historical records databases. The focus will include useful search tricks such as: a general search, wildcard searches, spouse searches, surname searches, given name searches, date searches, searches using other family members, parent searches, and a locality search. What is a FamilySearch affiliate library?
FamilySearch affiliate libraries have access to FamilySearch’s digital genealogical collections that are otherwise accessible only through a FamilySearch center. Use of FamilySearch does require creating an account. It is free to create an account, and once the account is created, it is free to use FamilySearch.
Does FamilySearch have records for Caribbean islands?
FamilySearch has collections representing locations all over the world, sorted broadly as North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia/Oceania. The Caribbean islands are grouped under North America. Learn More
What can I see on FamilySearch.org at the Caribbean Genealogy Library, that I can’t see from home?
On FamilySearch.org, some images have restrictions or limitations that determine who can see them or where you can see them. Without the necessary permissions, you might see a restricted icon and a message such as “Unable to Display Image Group.” In some cases, you can gain access by visiting a FamilySearch center or an affiliate library. The Caribbean Genealogy Library is an affiliate library. In other words, records that appear as restricted from your home computer are, in many cases, viewable from the Caribbean Genealogy Library because of its affiliate status.
Does FamilySearch have a help center?
FamilySearch regularly offers programs to help researchers use FamilySearch and with genealogy in general. In June, they are offering a “Juneteenth Roots to Freedom Live Series,” which focuses on African American ancestor discovery strategies. Learn More
