Senator Ray Fonseca expresses concern over the misrepresentation of his proposed legislation, Bill No. 36-0023, “An Act amending title 33 Virgin Islands Code, Chapter 4, section 72 relating to the highway user tax”, and seeks to clarify the intent and impact of the bill. Contrary to recent reports, the legislation does not impose an annual tax.
Instead, it applies only to new vehicles being brought to the territory.
Furthermore, the majority of Virgin Islanders will not be affected by this change. The bill only increases fees on vehicles exceeding 6,000 pounds, ensuring that those contributing the most wear and tear to the territory’s roads contribute fairly to their maintenance. Common vehicles such as sedans, Jeeps, all Acura models, etc., and even some trucks will not see any increase in fees.
“This propose legislation is designed to create a fair system where larger, heavier vehicles that have a greater impact on our highways and roadways contribute appropriately to their upkeep,” said Senator Fonseca. “It is important to correct the misinformation being circulated and assure the public that the majority of vehicle owners will see no change in their fees.”
