Brothers made a big statement by beating the men’s league champions of the Michael Richardson Sr. Winter Power Volleyball League, Island Boyz, in their first match of the 6th Annual Labor Day Volleyball Tournament, which was played at the Digna Wheatley Gymnasium at Ivanna Eudora Kean High School on Thursday evening.

This highly competitive match was enriched by the quality of the players, most of whom started playing the game right here on St. Thomas. Tough serves, hard spikes, and accurate passes made for a very entertaining match.  Brothers came out on top with a straight-set victory 25-22; 25-20.

The other male match played on Thursday evening saw a young team named Block Party, comprised of current high school students, face one of the teams favored to win the men’s division, Dirty Cowboys. The Cowboys hail from Orlando, Fla. The last time the team played in this event, they rode away with the crown. The Cowboys won this match easily, 25-4; 25-11.

The ladies opened the tournament with two matches.  Kiss My Pass is the 2024 winner of the women’s division of the Michael Richardson Sr. Winter Power Volleyball League.  They are one of the teams in the women’s division vying to dethrone Sacale, the powerhouse team from St. Croix.  Kiss My Pass played Island Mixx Elite in their opening match.  Island Mixx is a young team with players aged 12 to 15.   Kiss My Pass won in straight sets 25-12; 25-21.

In the only match where we saw a split, Hot Shots and Dig This played to a 1-1 draw.  Hot Shots won the first set 25-22. Dig This responded and won the second 25-20.  In the preliminary rounds, matches will only be two sets, regardless of the outcome.   If there is a tie going into the playoff phase, tiebreakers will be used to separate teams.  During the playoffs, deciding sets will be played if necessary.

The action continues on Friday at the Digna Wheatley Gymnasium.
