VITFF: Smith, Swindell and Pemberton Competing at World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru

Recent results from the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation:

Michelle Smith

Virgin Islands Sports Ambassador Michelle Smith competed in the first round of the 400m hurdles at the World Athletics U20 Championships. Smith won her heat with a 57.85 seconds and was the fastest qualifier advancing.

She will be competing in the semi-finals in Heat 2 Lane 8 at 3:43 p.m. (local Peru time) on Friday, Aug. 30. (4:43 p.m. V.I. time). The top 2 of each heat and the next two fastest times will qualify for the final on Saturday, Aug. 31.

Our very own Virgin Islands Track and Field member Sofia Swindell is set to compete in the first round of the 100m hurdles at the World Athletics U20 Championships.

Swindell, who earned bronze in the 100m hurdles at Carifta 2024 and also took home a bronze at the NACAC U18 Championships in 2023, will be racing in Heat 4 Lane 2. Her event is scheduled for 9:42 a.m. local Peru time (10:42 a.m. VI time) on Aug. 29.

The top two finishers in each heat, along with the next eight fastest times, will advance to the semi-finals later that day at 3:05 p.m. local Peru time.

Brandon Pemberton

The World Under 20 Championships in Lima, Peru, is in full swing! Brandon Pemberton represented the Virgin Islands in his debut 100-meter heat, clocking in a time of 10.92 secondsโ€”0.41 seconds off his personal best. Although he did not advance to the semi-finals, Pemberton is grateful for the experience and is motivated more than ever for future competitions.
