The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI) awarded two $5,000 scholarships from The Lawyers’ Scholarship Fund at CFVI. The Fund was established in 2022 by former St. Croix attorneys Lisa Harris Moorhead and Susan Bastress.
Amisha Mirchandani and Layalie Washshah are the recipients of this year’s Lawyers’ Scholarship awards, which are part of CFVI’s overall 2024-25 academic scholarship cycle. A comprehensive list of all CFVI scholarship award winners will be announced soon.
Mirchandani, a graduate of Antilles School on St. Thomas, will be attending Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law in Pennsylvania.
“I am so thankful for this amazing opportunity that will support my journey to becoming an attorney,” she said. “This significant investment in my future career is invaluable as I pursue my goal of providing accessible and high-quality legal assistance to members of my community.”
Washshah, a graduate of Good Hope Country Day School, was born and raised on St. Croix and is the first member of her family to pursue a legal education. She will be attending Loyola University Chicago School of Law this fall.

“My passion for law started at a young age, fueled by a dream to enact positive change in the world,” she said. “My goal is to use the knowledge and skills gained in law school to improve the lives and uphold the rights of individuals in my community, with future ambitions to contribute on a global scale. Ultimately, I aim to return to the U.S. Virgin Islands, where I hope to apply everything I’ve learned to make a meaningful difference in my local community.”
The Lawyers’ Scholarship Fund was set up to provide scholarship assistance to eligible college students who are planning to attend law school.
“We are delighted that this year’s scholarship awards are going to these two talented young women,” said Moorhead. “And we look forward to watching them join the successful rising generation of Virgin Islands lawyers.”
