Cruz Bay Traffic Pattern Changes Once Again

Motorists in Cruz Bay who were surprised by last week’s sudden announcement concerning changes in the traffic pattern for Cruz Bay have been surprised once again.

Officials decided to wait before implementing a change that would have reversed the direction of traffic on the one-way road that goes from Connections past the Lutheran Church to the ferry dock.

Until further notice, the traffic will continue to flow westward toward the ferry dock, according to Shikima Jones-Sprauve, St. John island administrator.

Jones-Sprauve said that better signage was needed to prepare drivers moving from the ferry dock up a one-way street through an intersection and into a road with traffic flowing in both directions. Once striping can be completed and better signage implemented, the change will take place, she added.

However, one change announced recently will be implemented — with a slight modification.  Traffic will no longer be allowed to flow in both directions on the road between the Battery and the post office. That road, officially named Henry Samuel Street, is now a one-way road heading only in the direction of the ferry dock.

There is one exception: Any motorist exiting the Port Authority parking lot directly across from the Cruz Bay post office can make a right turn towards the ferry or a left turn towards Caps Place located on Vester Gade.

The Virgin Island Police Department encourages motorists to stay alert, follow the striping, and pay close attention to the new posting of traffic signage.

“There will be no citations issued for now to ensure everyone is familiarized with the new flow of traffic,” according to a press release issued by the V.I. Police Department. Officials thanked motorists for their understanding and cooperation.
