United States Honor Flag Ceremony: Remembering Detective Delberth Phipps Jr.

In a heartwarming display of honor and remembrance, the air at Cyril E. King Airport on Wednesday seemed to stand still as the United States Honor Flag made its grand entrance. The flag, steeped in history and emotions, carried with it a profound sense of duty and tribute, signifying the sacrifice of Detective Delberth Phipps Jr., a true V.I. hero who lost his life in the line of duty on July 4.

As the sun glistened on the Stars and Stripes, it felt as though the entire island of St. Thomas was holding its breath in anticipation of the ceremonial presentation. Gov. Albert Bryan Jr., resolute and dignified, stood alongside the grieving family of Detective Phipps, offering them unwavering support and solace during this challenging time.

Retired U.S. Army Special Agent Chris Heisler, the founder of the United States Honor Flag, carried the weight of countless heroes’ memories as he approached the family. The flag he held bore witness to the bravery and sacrifice of those who had gone before, particularly the fallen heroes of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Heisler’s mission to ensure that national heroes were never forgotten was palpable, and his presence brought a sense of unity and strength to all who were gathered.

In a poignant ceremony on the tarmac, the United States Honor Flag was draped over Detective Phipps’ coffin, signifying the nation’s deep appreciation and gratitude for his service. The flag seemed to embrace the fallen detective, symbolizing that his memory would forever be enshrined in the heart of the territory he served so valiantly.

Bryan’s order to keep all Virgin Islands flags at half-mast until the day of Detective Phipps’ interment at Western Cemetery on St. Thomas on Saturday exemplified the profound impact of the detective’s service on the community and the deep loss felt by the Virgin Islands. The people of the territory united in solidarity, standing shoulder to shoulder with the Phipps family during their time of grief.

Phipps will lie in state at Government House on Friday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. The second viewing will be held on Saturday at the University of Virgin Islands Elridge W. Blake Sports and Fitness Center from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. The funeral service will begin promptly at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Western Cemetery #3.
