VITFF Bulletin: Michelle Smith Sets New V.I. National Record!

Virgin Islands National Team member and V.I. Sports Ambassador Michelle Smith broke the Virgin Islands National record in the 800m by running a 2:07.95!

Michelle Smith competed in the 800m at the Florida State Relays in Tallahassee, Fla., on March 24, and the 16-year-old broke the 10-year-old record of 2:08.43 previously held by Ninfa Barnard. Smith is the Florida State Leader in the 800m, and she is ranked No. 2 in the United States in the 800m.

With this accomplishment, Smith now holds two Virgin Islands National Records, the 400m hurdles set last year at the World Athletics U20 Championships and the newly acquired 800m.

On March 25, she competed in the 400m hurdles and placed first with a season-best of 58.41, which ranks her No. 1 in the United States.

Michelle Smith will be competing next in the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., on March 31.

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Omari Bennett, a student at Hammond High School in Columbia, S.C., competed in the Orangeburg Prep Meet 1 in Orangeburg, S.C., on March 22. Bennett finished first in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet 10 inches, and he placed 5th in the discus with a throw of 93 feet and 10 inches.

On March 24, Bennett competed in the Bob Jenkins Coaches Classic Track and Field Region 4 Meet in Blythewood, S.C. He finished 2nd in the 110m Hurdles with a time of 14.42.

He will compete next in the Heathwood Hall Meet in Columbia, S.C., on March 29.

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Mikaela Smith, competing for Austin Peay State University, competed in the Margaret Simmons Invitational, in Murray, Ky., on March 25. She finished 6th in the 1500m with a personal record of 4:49.29.

Smith will compete next in the Joe Walker Invitational on April 7 and April 8, in Oxford, Miss.

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Nicola Peters, a junior at Sparkman High School, competed in the Northridge-Jaguar Invitational, on March 25.

Peters finished 6th in the final of the 100m in a time of 12.90 seconds.

She will compete next in the Bob Jones Invitational in Madison, Ala., on April 1.

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Rachel Conhoff, a senior at Ursinus College, competed in her university’s home meet, UC Outdoor Invite, on March 25.

She competed in the 5000m and placed 2nd overall with a time of 17:58.31.

Conhoff’s next track meet will be April 1, where she will compete in the Muhlenberg Invitational, in Allentown, Penn.
