Director Barbara Jackson-McIntosh informs the motoring public that the Bureau of Motor Vehicles effective March 1, all vehicles with temporary plates that were issued by the BMV will be exchanged at no cost for the new mandatory VI 175th Emancipation Commemorative plates. An appointment is required.

All other vehicles will be issued new plates during the registration process only. In order to complete the registration process, the old plates must be removed and returned to the BMV. If there is a failure to do so, the registration process will not be completed.

If a person is 65 or older, the plate is free.   Personalized plates will be charged $49 and Vanity plates will continue to be charged by the organization issuing the plates.

If a person renews registration online, that person will be able to pay for the new plate. People do not need an appointment to come in to return the old plates and pick up the new plates. The plates will not be mailed.

Email the BMV at www.bmv.vi.gov for further information or a need for clarification. To make an appointment go to www.bmv.vi.gov or email info@bmv.vi.gov or call the offices: St. Croix at 713-4268, St. at Thomas 774-4268; St John at 776-6262.
