8 Incredibly Beautiful Beaches To Visit on St. Thomas

There are approximately 40 beaches on the island of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. And in the USVI, all beaches are, by law, open and available for the public to enjoy.

In this article, we’ll look at eight gorgeous tropical beaches on St. Thomas. On this list, you’ll find several trendy beaches popular among tourists and others very secluded and off the beaten path. You’re sure to find a stretch of sand that you’ll love at any of the beaches on the island.

  1. Magens Bay

Magens Bay is one of the most popular and frequently visited beaches in St. Thomas, and for a good reason. With its soft, powdery-white sand, numerous palm trees and picnic tables, and warm and generally calm waters, this is truly an example of an idyllic tropical beach you’ve likely dreamed about.

There is something for everyone along this stretch of sand, including rock formations, to explore and snorkel at the far end of the bay. Closer to the entrance to Magens, an open-air bar and patio is the perfect place to grab a tropical cocktail.

A small fee is required to access Magens, which is paid to the Magens Bay Authority to help keep the beach clean. Restrooms and outdoor showers are available. Lifeguards are on duty at specified times.

Additionally, the “Discovery Nature Trail” is a fantastic hiking path to experience while at the beach!

2. Hull Bay

Also positioned on the north side of St. Thomas and not too far from Magens Bay is a local favorite, “Hull Bay.”

Hull Bay offers beachgoers a chance to escape crowds and enjoy a relaxing, small-town vibe on the sand. While this stretch of shoreline is rockier than Magens Bay, you’ll still likely find a soft, powdery area to relax.

Hull Bay is an ideal location to take out a stand-up paddle board, and surfers flock to this area when the swells are strong.

Across the street from the beach, food and tropical beverages are available, setting the stage for a perfect beach day.

3. Mermaid’s Chair and Sandy Cay

If you’re looking for secluded beaches on St. Thomas, “Mermaid’s Chair” and “Sandy Cay” are excellent destinations. Several stretches of the coast are located within gated communities or areas that are more difficult to access. Beaches such as “Mermaid’s Chair” and “Sandy Cay” are two examples.

“Mermaid’s Chair” is a narrow strand of sand where the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet, a spot that you’re more than likely to have all to yourself. And right next to this idyllic slice of paradise is “Sandy Cay,” another stunning tropical bay.

Both beaches are located within “Botany Bay,” an exclusive, gated community on the far west of St. Thomas. These two beaches are spectacular and worth the somewhat challenging trek to the sea!

Note: While all beaches are public, it is always wise to be mindful and respectful of all coastlines and the residents who call the area home!

4. Coki Beach

Coki Beach (pronounced as “Ko-Kee” and also referred to as Coki Point) is another favorite beach among tourists.

Coki is situated on the east end of St. Thomas and is very close to “Coral World Ocean Park” (one of many activities to plan while you’re on the island!).

This tropical beach is a popular place to snorkel and enjoy the soft sand while soaking up the Caribbean Sun.

5. Lindquist Beach/Smith Bay Park

Also located on the east end of the isle is the exquisite “Lindquist Beach.” Located within a 21-acre nature preserve named “Smith Bay Park,” this area is managed by the Magens Bay Authority .

“Smith Bay Park, established in 2006, includes both coastal and marine ecosystems of significant beauty and importance. The 21-acre park is home to an assortment of plants, birds, and marine life.

Lindquist Beach offers amenities similar to Magens Bay, including restrooms and showers, as well as tables and chairs to enjoy a picnic at the shore. There is no restaurant or bar here, so plan to bring food and drink items. (And be sure to dispose of trash upon your departure!)

Note: As is true at Magens Bay, a nominal fee is required to access Smith Bay Park, and this payment contributes to keeping the beach immaculate.

6. Sapphire Beach

Positioned just to the east of Smith Bay Park is “Sapphire Beach,” and the name says it all!

The azure ocean at Sapphire Beach is mesmerizing, and the location is frequently visited and enjoyed by vacationers. Several properties along the coast at Sapphire Beach offer short-term rentals, including “Sapphire Village” condominiums.

Additionally, “Sudi’s Caribbean Bar and Grille” and “Sapphire Beach Bar” are good choices for a bite to eat or a cold drink. Parties and events, including live music, are regular occurrences at Sapphire Beach Bar, which is situated just steps from the soft sand!

7. Secret Harbor Beach

“Secret Harbor Beach” is another favorite vacation destination where travelers can rent accommodations. This area is also perfectly suitable to visit for only a day to enjoy the sun and sand!

Secret Harbor is located along the south shore of St. Thomas’s east end at “Nazareth Bay.” The oceanfront “Secret Harbor Beach Resort” is a popular resort that offers guests and daily visitors an oceanfront bar and restaurant and delivers beautiful views and a lovely atmosphere for dining.

8. Brewer’s Bay

Another south shore beach to add to your list on St. Thomas is “Brewer’s Bay.” The large, sandy bay is frequented by snorkelers, sunbathers, and even sea glass enthusiasts!

While sitting on the sand and enjoying the view, you’ll have the chance to see airplanes arriving and departing St. Thomas, as this spot faces Cyril E. King Airport. (We won’t blame you for smiling at the departing flights as you live the island dream on the beach!)

“The sand near the water is mostly soft and fine. The sand overall, however, is a combination of both fine and coarse sand plus small rocks. It’s a nice beach for taking a stroll and beach combing. Explore the shore for bits of coral, shells, sea glass, and things cast up by the tides. Be sure to leave the shells on the beach after looking at them. Keep in mind it is illegal to remove shells from beaches in the Virgin Islands.

With its miles of coastline, any beach on St. Thomas will likely bring you happiness and relaxation, and now is a magnificent time to visit the island! Please see the VI Source’s new Travel/Tourism section for more travel-related content.
