The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has indicated that rough seas will impact the region through the beginning of the week. Several marine weather alerts have been issued, and swimmers and boaters are encouraged to exercise caution.
A “Small Craft Advisory” is currently in effect for portions of the waters around northern Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands until at least Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 2 a.m. AST. Seas are forecast to reach up to 10 feet across some areas.
Additionally, a “High Rip Current Risk” will go into effect for portions of the USVI beginning on Monday, Jan. 30 at 6 a.m. AST until at least Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 6 a.m. AST. Areas of northern Puerto Rico are currently under advisories about elevated rip current risks through at least Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 6 a.m. AST.
“Breezy conditions and small northeasterly swells will maintain choppy to hazardous marine conditions for small craft, and life-threatening rip currents for beachgoers,” according to an update on Saturday afternoon from the NWS.
