Career Education Week saw the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA or Authority) head to Juanita Gardine Elementary School on St. Croix and Addelita Cancryn Junior High School on St. Thomas to share with students the diverse career paths available within the energy and utility industry sectors.
“Career Education Week is a wonderful opportunity to connect with students as they begin to develop a curiosity about what their future will look like,” said Shania Lynch, who helped facilitate WAPA’s participation and serves as an administrative assistant for the Authority’s line department on St. Croix.
During the Authority’s visit to Juanita Gardine Elementary School, employees shared what a day in the life of an electrical engineer, lineman, line supervisor and clerk dispatcher entails and how teamwork is essential to ensuring success. On St. Thomas, the Authority’s human resources (HR) team spoke with Cancryn students about HR’s vital role in recruiting valuable talent for the authority and emphasized the importance of maintaining good study habits and completing their high school education.
“There are so many unique career opportunities that even adults aren’t aware of that exist within the Authority. Sharing this knowledge with young students is one of the first steps in planting the seeds of possibility. When I was growing up, I really was unclear about what I wanted to do career-wise. I believe dedicating time early on to speak with students about all the diverse career paths available is of great value,” said Marquis McGregor, electrical engineer level ll at WAPA.
A heartfelt thank you is extended to the Human Resources and Transmission and Distribution departments for their participation in Career Education Week on behalf of the Authority.
