Ivanna Eudora Kean Gymnasium came alive on Saturday as the high school hosted three playoff games in the St. Thomas/St. John Interscholastic Athletic Association 2021-2022 Basketball League Playoffs. All three contests were the second game in the best-of-three series in the Middle School Boys, Varsity Girls, and Varsity Boys divisions.
Middle School Boys Championship Series – Game 2 – Antilles 30 – Addelita Cancryn 20
The first game highlighted the Middle School Boys Division featuring the undefeated Addelita Cancryn Intermediate School Rising Phoenix versus Antilles School Hurricanes. The Rising Phoenix won the first game of this championship series and was looking to pop the apple cider with a win on Saturday. But the Canes came out strong, scoring 13 points in the first quarter, and they never looked back.
Antilles won the game 30-20. Dillen Webbe led all scorers with 15 points, and teammate Sekai Pinney added seven. Chakeem Dore was the top scorer for the Rising Phoenix with six points. The final game for this championship series is scheduled for Monday, April 4, 2022, at 4:00 pm at the Mark C. Marin Center at Antilles School.
Varsity Girls Semifinal Series – Game 2 – Ivanna Eudora Kean 25 – Antilles 22
After a convincing win in Game 1 of this semifinal series, the Lady Rays of Ivanna Eudora Kean High School had to dig deep to win this low score defensive struggle against the Lady Canes of Antilles School 25-22. For the first time all season, the Lady Hurricanes went into halftime with the lead. The Lady Rays took control of the game with a 12-point third quarter. The Hurricanes fought hard in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Rays punched their ticket into the championship series, where they will play the undefeated Charlotte Amalie High School Lady Hawks. Jada Isaac led the Rays with 10 points. Freshman C’Orna Greene was the game’s top scorer with 11 points.
Varsity Boys Semifinal Series – Game 2 – Antilles 36 – Charlotte Amalie – 33
Charlotte Amalie High School Chicken Hawks escaped with a two-point victory in the first game of this best-of-three series. In the game, the Hurricanes were in full control for the majority of that game, taking a nine-point lead into the final quarter. But the Chicken Hawks came back to win Game 1, 57-55.
In Game 2, played on Saturday afternoon, Antilles won this lower scoring affair, 36-33. Both teams were without their top scores from the first encounter. Elijah Peltier led all scorers with 23 points for CAHS, and Trevor Prince was the top scorer for Antilles with 22 points. They both were missing in action for Game 2, leaving their coaches to find offense through other means. Lorenz Penn stood up and dropped 12 points for the Canes. Kimani Thomas and Ca’Jonte Andrews each put up eight points for the Chicken Hawks.
The rubber match of this series will be played on Monday, April 4, 2022, in the MCM Center at 5:15 pm.
