The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a nearby earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale shortly before 1 a.m. Friday, March 26. According to the USGS preliminary report, it occurred at a depth of 26 kilometers. It was reportedly around 50 kilometers north to northeast from Guadeloupe and 110 kilometers east by southeast from Antigua, relatively far from land.
A magnitude 5.8 earthquake can cause minor damage to structures near the epicenter and could trigger a tsunami. The V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency issued a notice saying an alert would be sent if a tsunami formed. No tsunami was reported.
