HUD Awards USVI $13M in Grants for Affordable Housing

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, released the following statement regarding the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announcement of $13 million in funding to the V.I. Housing Authority to provide affordable housing, community development and economic opportunity, and support to individuals and families experiencing homelessness:

“I am happy to announce $13 million dollars in grants for the Virgin Islands from HUD today. One of the grants announced today provides $10 million through HUD’s Capital Fund Program, which offers annual funding to all public housing authorities to build, renovate and/or modernize the public housing in their communities. Housing authorities can use the funding to complete large-scale improvements such as replacing roofs or making energy-efficient upgrades to heating systems and installing water conservation measures.

“Other grants announced today are provided through the following HUD programs:

$1.9 million in CDBG Funding— The Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG) provides annual grants on a formula basis to states, cities, and counties to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons.

$911,000 in HOME Funding — The HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) provides funding to states and localities that communities use — often in partnership with local nonprofit groups — to fund a wide range of activities including building, buying and/or rehabilitating affordable housing for rent or homeownership or providing direct rental assistance to low-income people.

$164,208 in Emergency Solutions Funding — Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) provides funds for homeless shelters, assists in the operation of local shelters and funds related social service and homeless prevention programs.

“Combined the ESG, CDBG, and HOME programs will provide critically needed funding to thousands of local programs in the U.S. Virgin Islands.”
