Movies Come Back – USVI Caribbean Cinemas to Reopen Thursday

Caribbean Cinemas in Market Square East, St. Thomas, and at Sunny Isle, St. Croix, will reopen on Thursday, Sept. 17, the company announced.

The theater chain says it will follow the guidelines and recommendations presented by the V.I. government.

Virgin Islanders have been mostly unable to go to the movies since the coronavirus pandemic began in earnest in March. The company resumed operations in June after being closed since March and decided to close a month later due to the lack of film releases from Hollywood.

The first batch of new movies includes the release of the spy action espionage thriller “Tenet.” That film has grossed more than $207 million in theaters worldwide through Sept. 13, and was directed by Christopher Nolan, of “Inception” and “The Dark Knight Trilogy.”

“Unhinged,” starring Russell Crowe, will also open Thursday. “Unhinged” centers around a terrifying cat-and-mouse chase between an unnamed stranger played by Crowe and a woman named Rachel, played by Caren Pistorius, who provokes the stranger’s ire when she tries to get around him in a traffic jam.

“The Outpost,” “Birds of Prey,” “Abominable,” “Kung Fu Panda” and “Minions” will be rereleased and offered at a discounted price, as well as all movies on Thursdays, as part of “Customer Appreciation Day.” Cinemas will remain closed from Monday to Wednesday until further notice and their operational hours will be two shows Thursdays and Fridays from 6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays three shows from 2:30 p.m.

Starting on Oct. 8 the theaters will present “The New Mutants,” based on the Marvel comics in the X-Men universe and “The War With Grandpa,” a family comedy starring Robert DeNiro. “Infidel” comes out on Oct. 15.

In its announcement, the company said health and safety protocols will continue to be observed, including social distancing rules, the mandatory wearing of face masks and temperature checks.

Auditorium capacity was reduced to create social distancing by leaving seats and empty rows between parties. Additional cleaning time has been added between shows and in the concession area, and employees will be required to use gloves and protective gear.

For a limited time, private screenings packages including a movie, popcorn and soda will be available for friends or family groups of 20 guests or more.

More information about upcoming releases will be available on the Caribbean Cinemas’ Facebook page or on the company’s websites for their St. Thomas and St. Croix facilities.
