Man Wounded in Savan’s Second Shooting in a Few Hours

A man was injured by gunfire in the Savan area of St. Thomas, less than four hours after another man was shot to death int he same area, the V.I. Police Department reported.

According to police, at approximately 1:05 a.m. Monday, the 911 Emergency Call Center dispatched officers to the Schneider Regional Medical Center regarding a gunshot victim. At the hospital the male victim told detectives he had been in the Savan area walking to his vehicle where he heard multiple shots being fired. He said he realized that he had been shot and called a relative to take him to the hospital.

The victim’s name was not released by police,, in accordance with department policy.

The call about the shooting followed by about four hours a call to the dispatcher about a victim of a fatal shooting in the area.

According to police, at about 9:41 p.m. Sunday the 911 dispatch center received a call of a gunshot victim in the Savan area of St. Thomas. Arriving at the scene, officers found a male individual, subsequently identified as 24-year-old Vernon Rawlins, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Rawlins was transported to Schneider Regional Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

The police urged anyone with information regarding either incident incident to call 911, the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 340-774-2211 extension 5569, or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477 (1-800-222-TIPS).
