Man Dies in Hospital Ground Shooting; Fourth STT Homicide in Three Days

A man identified by police as 31-year-old Kalico Canton died Monday night after being shot in the area of Hospital Ground, according to the V.I. Police Department.

At about 11:07 p.m. Monday VIPD officers responded to the area of Hospital Ground after being notified of the sound of gunfire. At the scene officers found an individual in the roadway. He was later identified as Canton. Further examination revealed that the man had been shot about the body.

It was the fourth homicide on St. Thomas in three days. Jackeel Henry, 27, was killed at noon Saturday in a shooting in Estate Nadir, in which a woman was also injured. No further information about the incident has been provided by police, including the condition of the woman. On Sunday, four people were shot, at least two fatally, at the Exclusive Bar & Nightclub in Contant. On Jan. 7 the police identified the two men who died as a result of the shooting. The victims are Luis Castillo Agramonte, age 27 and Ivan de Aza, age 45. Police said de Aza shot three people, including Agramonte, who died of his wounds, then was shot and killed.

According to the V.I. Source homicide list, Canton’s death was the 17th homicide on St. Thomas since the beginning the year, the 39th in the territory. The V.I. Source homicide list is based on police reports but, unlike the VIPD list and those in other media, does not include suicides or vehicular homicides, so the total number of incidents may vary.

Police urged anyone with information about the crime to contact 911, the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 340-774-2211 ext. 5606, or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated since it was original posting, to correct the name of the scene of the Contant homicide to the Exclusive Nightclub & Bar, which had originally been misidentified in the police report, and to include the names of the recently identified deceased from that incident. The Source regrets the error.
