Doyle, Albert Fontenot of the U.S. Census Bureau, UVI President Dr. David Hall and Sen. Marvin Blyden prepare to cut the ribbon, officially opening the St. Thomas local district office of the U.S. Census in the Virgin Islands.

The U.S. Virgin Islands Census offices opened on St. Thomas on Wednesday, Oct. 23 and on St. Croix on Thursday, Oct. 24.

Each office will support field operations during the 2020 Census, helping to ensure that everyone is counted once, only once, and in the right place.

Article 1, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution requires that an accurate count be taken of the U.S. population every 10 years. The federal government distributes more than $675 billion each year to states and communities based upon Census Bureau data.

St. Thomas and St. Croix are two of the five Island Areas Census offices including American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) and Guam. Each Island Area Census collects demographic, social, economic and housing characteristics.

Since 1980, the University of the Virgin Islands has been tasked with conducting the data collection operation of the Census in the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 1988, it was designated as the U.S. Virgin Islands Census Data Center.
