The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation (VITFF) held the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) Junior Track and Field trials meet on Saturday at the Ivana Eudora Kean High School Track and Field facility on St. Thomas. The trials alternate between St. Croix and St. Thomas annually. Serving as trials in addition are several Interscholastic Athletic Association meets and VITFF meets held at the St. Croix Educational Complex High School on St. Croix as well as the Agfair Meet held in conjunction with the Agfair.

Athletes under 20 years old get the opportunity to qualify for CARIFTA, which will be held this year in the Cayman Islands. To date, two athletes have met the standards in their events: Michelle Smith of the St. Croix Track Club in the 1500 meters and Ariana Edgar of the SCTC in the shot put. Smith, 13 years of age, is too young, and unless she is given special permission by CARIFTA organizers, she will not compete. Edgar met the qualifying standard multiple times and most recently at an AAJI meet at Turabo University in Puerto Rico. Others close to the standard are being monitored.

Notes:
1. Athletes may qualify for the team at any competition sanctioned by the IAAF and/or its national affiliated federations. Qualifying Standards are posted on: http://virginislandspace.org/vitff.html
2. Athletes are required to register with the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation and have their eligibility established.
3. Athletes must be 17 or 19 years of age or younger on Dec. 31, 2019
4. Team size will be determined by the number of athletes/coaches selected and availability of funds.
5. The CARIFTA Trials were organized by the Cheetahs Track Club and the St. Croix Track Club and sanctioned by the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation
6. Thanks go to Genitta Richards, principal at the St. Croix Educational Complex School, and Sally Petty, principal at the Ivana Eudora Kean High School. for the permits to use the facilities. Thanks also to the volunteers, coaches and athletes.
7. The CARIFTA is scheduled for April 20-22 in the Cayman Islands.
