Herman Edward Richardson Dies in Virginia

Herman Edward Richardson

Herman Edward Richardson was born on St. Martin on Oct. 12, 1935, to Gaston “Nell” and Josephine (Mingo) Richardson, the oldest of 10 sons. He was married for 24 years to Shirley (Helms) Richardson with whom he had six sons.

Herman was educated at St. Norbert College prior to joining the U.S. Army. He retired from the military with a rank of lieutenant colonel, having served 20 years in the U.S., France, Germany and Vietnam. He then embarked on a second career serving the Virgin Islands Government as Deputy Commissioner of Health for Hospitals, Commissioner of Property and Procurement, and Assistant Commissioner for Planning and Resources.

One of the many highlights of his work during that time was obtaining funding to build a new hospital (what became the Roy L. Schneider Hospital in St. Thomas). During this time, he also served as Chairman of the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA) Board for several years. Herman was a fixture in Frenchtown, living at Honduras 32 and caring for both his parents in the last decade of their lives. He frequently served as a judge for the Annual Bastille Day Kingfish Tournament.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents: Gaston and Josephine, and his son David.

He is survived by his nine brothers: Celeste and wife Monika, Marius and wife Jean, Elmo and wife Chelsea, Allan and wife Melinda, Leslie and wife Judith, Henry, Raymond and wife Patricia, Gerald, and Stephen and wife Theresa; sons: Jon, Peter and wife Christina, Marty and wife Nani, Paul and wife Sheila, and Alex; His grandchildren: Tande, Kaleo, Moani, David, Pomaika’i, Andrew and Kupono; and many other relatives, friends and neighbors.

A viewing will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21, at Turnbull’s Funeral Home. A second viewing will take place at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 22, at St. Anne’s Church in Frenchtown. Interment will be at Western Cemetery No. 2.
