Olga Marion Phipps Dies at 97

After a long illness, Olga M. Phipps died on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the age of 97 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Phipps; and three of her children: Aubrey “Bobsy,” Deloris “Ruthie” and Vierling “Noddy” Hendrickson.

She will be remembered by her children: Ovan Taylor (UK), Muriel Gibbs (BDS), David “Dick” Taylor (UK), Pamella Powell (St. Croix), Mercia Wallace (St. Croix), Blondell “Petra” Hamilton (St. Thomas), Ann-Merrie Hendrickson (St. Croix); daughters-in-law: Hyacinth Hendrickson (Nev.) and Millie Taylor (U.K.); sons-in-law: Leroy Gibbs (BDS) and Leroy Wallace (STX).

Olga will also be fondly missed by her 25 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren to include: Dionne and Terry Taylor (UK), Jasmine (N.Y.), Glen Brathwaite (Fla.), Junior “Boxer” Hendrickson (Nev.), Merrick Richardson (Anguilla), Valencia, Shane, Duan and Dwane Hendrickson (Nev.), Michael, Marvin, Garvin, Oge and Laron Hendrickson (Fla.), Warren, Nikki, Candace and Garnella Powell (St. Croix), Calicia Hendrickson-Ayubi (Fla.), Stephanie (St. Thomas) and Clive Hamilton (UK), Kenisha Hendrickson (St. Croix), Sharaim Tyrell (Nev.) and Geron Javois (Texas).

She is also survived by stepchildren: Eugene, Laurem, Sonia, Jerome, Claudius and Thomas Phipps; nieces and nephew: Elton, Agnes and Yvonne Trotman (N.Y.), Violet Selkridge (SKB), Donna Boyd (N.Y.), Maxine Bowry, Lauren Maloney and Paulina Simmonds; family and friends: Bishop Ambrose Gumbs and family, Father Wesley Williams and family, Pastor Gladstone Hazel and family, Vida Hendrickson and family,

Other family and friends include: Dr. Merlene Jones and family, Janice Estrill, Hyacinth Hendricks, Millicent Smith, Shirley Grant, Netta Farrel and family, Celestina Edwards, Nora Jane, Judy Grybowski, Donald Morris, Jenny Clarke, Doreen Quinlan, Patrick and Teckla Hanley, Chefeta and Tony Browne, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church family and the Nazareth by the Sea Church family; as well as other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

A celebration of life will be held at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 19, at James Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, St. Croix.

There will be a viewing at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 21, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Estate Thomas, St. Thomas. Bishop Ambrose Gumbs and Rev. Lenroy Cabey will officiate. Interment will be at Western Cemetery.
