Hurricane Jose is expected to become a major hurricane, following a track to the Antilles similar to but slightly north of the trail of destruction Hurricane Irma blazed across the region Wednesday.
In its 11 a.m. Thursday update, the National Hurricane Center reported that Jose is developing an eye and has an initial intensity of 80 knots (nautical miles per hour,) or 92 miles an hour.
“The overall trend of intensification is not likely to have ended, and Jose is still forecast to become a major hurricane in about 24 hours,” the NHC predicted. However, the forecast added, “After about 48 hours, most of the intensity guidance indicates that Jose will begin to weaken.”
Forecast models disagree on the amount of weakening.
Jose is still expected to continue west-northwestward on a path similar to that of Irma, which pound the region Wednesday, devastating some of the northern Antilles and pounding St. Thomas and St. John. The path trend slightly north of Irma’s, passing north of the territory on late Saturday Sunday.
After it passes the region, Jose is expected to turn more toward the northwest, mirroring the abrupt northward turn Irma is expected to make when it approaches Florida. While that move is expected to devastate Florida, it should turn Jose safely out to sea.
