STAR Releases Results of 2017 Carnival Mile

Since 1983, the Carnival Mile has been organized by the St. Thomas Association of Roadrunners as a contribution to the preparation of Main Street, St. Thomas (from the Western Cemetery to the senior citizens’ reviewing stand at Roosevelt Park) for the surge of human energy that would take place there in the Adults Parade on Carnival’s last day.  This year, again with the generous sponsorship of Caribbean Surf Company, the one-mile was a great success, occurring under cool but rainy cloudy skies. St. Thomas Rescue, a valuable friend of the St. Thomas walking and running community, will be the beneficiary of this year’s proceeds.

As they had in several previous Carnival Miles, St. Thomas champions Shane DeGannes (in 4:48) and Ruth Ann David (in 5:49) raced with a field of 64 and emerge the 2017 victors.  Pre-teen runners Shaiah David (6:38) and Jack Oram (7:24) led 2/3 of the adult field to win their respective age groups.  Riley Oram represented teenagers well by finishing among the few who slipped under 7 minutes for the demanding race. Other age-group winners were Connor Mckelvey and Charlotte VanHeurck (in the 20-29 age group); Sander Lenten and Kristine Funk (30-39); Eric Oram and Lisa Parfitt (40-49); William McConnell and Kirstin McConnell (50-59) and Mark Pippen and Kathy Gibson (60 and over).

St. Thomas Association of Roadrunners (STAR) gives special thanks to Caribbean Surf Company, which was the main sponsor of the race, and to VIPD’s Officer Luwanda Chandler, traffic investigator, who was on site, assuring that runners, walkers and others could participate safely and unobstructed throughout the course. Gratitude also for St. Thomas Rescue and for STAR regulars, who passed up being in the event so that they could serve as volunteers, and for other community volunteers.
