One Killed in Bovoni Shooting

One man was killed late Friday in a shooting in the area of the Bovoni Housing Community, the V.I. Police Department reported.

The VIPD identified the victim as 23-year-old Mario Huggins of the housing community. It was the sixth homicide on St Thomas since the beginning of the year, the seventh in the territory.

According to police, at 11:20 p.m. Friday the 911 emergency call center received several reports of shots being fired in the Bovoni area. Citizens also reported a vehicle colliding into the bushes in the vicinity of building D.

Shortly thereafter, a citizen called 911 and reported that he was traveling to the Schneider Regional Medical Center with a gunshot victim, later identified as Huggins.

The victim sustained at least one gunshot wound to the upper body and succumbed to his injury at the Schneider Regional Medical Center.

No other details were available as of Saturday afternoon,

Police urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Virgin Islands Police Department at 340-774-2211, the Major Crime Unit at 340-715-5542, the 911 emergency call center, or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800–222-8477.
