A St. Thomas woman was murdered Thursday morning in her Amalie Terrace apartment in Hospital Ground by her son, who suffers from mental illness, according to the V.I. Police Department.
According to police, at 8:24 a.m. Thursday the 911 emergency center received a call from Jennifer Braithwaite reporting that she was being beaten by her son. The call was then disconnected.
At the scene officers discovered the body of Brathwaite in the apartment she shared with her son, Craig Francis. Emergency medical technicians arrived on the scene and determined that Brathwaite had no vital signs.
Reports to the Source from citizens, confirmed by Police Commissioner Police Commissioner Delroy Richards Sr., indicated the victim had been stabbed to death.
At roughly 9:51 a.m. a citizen called indicating that Francis was in the area of the bus stop adjacent to the Virgin Islands Legislature Building. As officers traveled to the site, Francis attempted to flee from police and was apprehended in the Fort Christian parking lot, police said.
Officers of the Major Crime Unit arrested Francis. He was charged with first-degree murder and was held without bail.
