Contant Man Charged with Possession of Unlicensed Firearm

Officers responding to a report of shots fired Thursday night arrested 20-year-old Jovon Smith of Contant and charged him with possession of an unlicensed firearm, the V.I. Police Department reported.

At 9:46 p.m. Thursday officers responded to shots fired in the areas of Virgillo’s and Sharky’s Restaurant. Upon the officers’ arrival, they were told that the suspects involved in the shooting had ran up the stairs to Sharky’s. The owner of Bliss Bar, located downstairs from Sharky’s, gave officers permission to inspect the premises.

During the inspection, officers allegedly discovered Smith inside the business’s closet. Smith was then patted down and a Glock .33 caliber handgun was allegedly found in the right side of his waistband.

Police reported they also discovered 22 small Ziploc bags containing green leafy substance that was field tested and identified as marijuana.

Bail for Smith was set at $25,000 and he was turned over to the Bureau of Correction pending his advised of rights hearing.
