VIPD, DLCA Alert Residents of Western Union Scams

The Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) and The Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs (DLCA)) are alerting the community about the trend of Western Union scams that the Economic Crime Unit office has been observing. The scam is based on receiving a message through cell phone, e-mail or Facebook, tricking the victims into believing that they were selected to win a vehicle, money or other rewards. In return, they have to send money via Western Union in order to retrieve their winnings.
Then when the victims send the monies the scammers change their contact information. As of May of this year to the present St. Croix has had nine different cases and several on St. Thomas. The VIPD and DLCA are asking the public to please be aware when sending monies through Western Union to people they do not know.
Should anyone have any questions or concerns, contact Economic Crime Unit detectives at 773-2266 on St Croix or 774- 3942 on St. Thomas.
