Driver Killed in Single-Vehicle Accident

A 51-year-old St. Thomas man was killed early Friday when the pickup he was driving ran off the road, the V.I. Police Department reported.

According to police, the 911 center received a call of an accident at 12:02 a.m. Friday at Veterans Drive in the area of Griffith Ballpark. At the scene, officers found a damaged white pickup with an unresponsive black man slouched in the driver’s seat.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the driver was driving eastward on Veterans in the area of Griffith Park when he ran off the eastern side of the roadway and collided into the concrete support of the light pole.

The victim was identified as 51-year-old Jerome Matthew. He was transported be ambulance to the Schneider Regional Medical Center, where he died of his injuries at 12:58 a.m.

The incident has been turned over to the Traffic Division for further investigation.
