The lure of possible employment at St. Croix’s newly licensed casino brought out an estimated 425 hopeful job applicants Saturday afternoon for a job fair hosted by VIGL Operations, LLC, operators of the casino that will open at the Caravelle Hotel in downtown Christiansted.
Another 180 or more potential employees have applied online with the Virgin Islands Department of Labor, the Caravelle announced in a news release from PR consultant Janet Dembeck.
The job fair was held at the Innovative Building, near the Juan F. Luis Hospital, to accommodate the crowd.
Applicants were encouraged to drop off their resumes or summaries of their work experience as well as to fill out or pick up an application. Applications for the available managerial and service industry jobs will be accepted until Friday.
“We are overwhelmed by the number of talented individuals who dedicated their afternoon to learn more about the job opportunities we are offering," said Lance Griffith, vice president of VIGL. "We are looking forward to building a team from this pool of talent to manage our island operations. I want to thank both the Virgin Islands Department of Labor and Innovative for their time and facilities. The outpouring of support we have received from private businesses and numerous government agencies has been truly amazing.”
Griffith said applications are being accepted for the following positions: General manager, human resource manager, controller, slot department manager, director of surveillance, valet captain, facilities maintenance technician, slot mechanics, slot attendants, surveillance officers, bartenders, wait staff, casino cashiers, security officers and valets.
Tisha Llanos, administrator of the V.I. Department of Labor, called the turnout encouraging.
"It is always so delightful to see jobseekers enthusiastic about job opportunities," Llanos said. "We encourage our customers to stay positive and portray confidence when seeking employment. That is exactly what I have experienced today. Jobseekers came prepared and ready to accept employment once offered."
Representatives from Innovative hosted a table where resumes and applications were accepted for their open positions.
The Virgin Islands Department Of Labor registered attendees and offered interested applicants a separate class, to be held later this month, on resume building and interview techniques. VIDOL representatives also told jobseekers about the importance of applying for vacancies on their workforce system. The system provides information on all upcoming activities available at the department.
