Man Shot and Killed Near UVI Campus on St. Thomas

Story was updated at 8:43 p.m.

Dennard Lawrence, 25, was shot and killed at 12:24 p.m. Thursday on the road adjacent to the University of the Virgin Islands Administrative Conference Center in Brewer’s Bay, St. Thomas.

Tamika Thomas-Williams, UVI public relations specialist, confirmed the victim was neither a student nor an employee of the university, but had no further details on the victim or the incident.

Contrary to rumors, Thomas-Williams said the campus was never put on “lockdown,” but the V.I. Police Department did close the roadway between the administration building and the Reichhold Center for the Arts. The roadway was opened again at 2:19 p.m.

Thomas-Williams said the incident was not on university property, but rather on the sidewalk next to the roadway in the area of UVI.

A statement from VIPD issued Thursday evening said Lawrence was listed as having been Dead On Arrival at the time police reached the scene.

Witnesses informed police that the young man had just disembarked from a safari bus and began to walk up the hill, making his way towards the beach when the sound of multiple gunshots were heard.

Lawrence sustained multiple gunshots, according to the statement from VIPD.

The incident is under investigation by Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Bureau.
