Work Begins on Scott Free Bridge Closure

Work began Monday constructing temporary access for the permanent closing of the Scott Free Bridge, which late in 2013 was declared seriously deficient and in dire need of replacement, the Department of Public Works announced Tuesday.

A section of Route 405 Scott Free Road, adjacent to the intersection with the bridge, will be closed to thru traffic until the temporary access is completed, according to Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls. Public Works provided a map showing the routes.

Motorists that regularly use Scott Free Road as a bypass to the west will need to take an alternate route, Smalls said. Residents that live north of the bridge will be able to access their properties only from Route 40 Solberg Road to the north. Residents that live south of the bridge will need to gain access to their properties from the south on Scott Free Road.

No through traffic will be allowed.

The contractor, Island Roads Corporation, is expected to utilize the Scott Free Road from the north to mobilize the equipment to the site and to deliver the necessary materials for this project, according to Public Works.

The works is expected to be completed by Feb. 28.

The department said motorists and residents should follow all posted signs and restrictions.
