Mertant Earl Benjamin Dies at 64

Mertant Earl Benjamin Mertant Earl Benjamin, also known as “Batigo” and “Batman,” of Mt. Pleasant died on Dec. 1 at his residence. He was 64 year old.
He is preceded in death by his father, Daniel Benjamin; mother, Aurora Booso Benjamin; and brother, Joseph Allick.
He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Hopkins Benjamin; mother-in-law, Ernestine Hopkins; daughter, Teneka S. Benjamin (N.Y.); son, Mertant Benjamin Jr. (Ga.); grandchildren: Gabriel Benjamin and Amia Benjamin; nieces: Okema Jackson, Aurora Grant; Linda Council and Josephine Allick; nephews: Jordan Hopkins, Joshua Hopkins and Jon-Matthew Hopkins; brother-in-law, James Michael Hopkins; sister-in-law, Sandra Yvonne Guilford; and special friends: Melroy James, Mario Carroll, Denzil Burroughs, Richard Cornelius, Domingo Felix, Melvin Johannes, Victor Hendricks, Thomas Farell, Narvarro, Egar “Country Boy” Hamilton, Gerald “Cuffy” Herbert, Genevieve Allen, Mary Thompson and Anna Osorio.
He is also survived by cousins and other relatives: Paulette Smith Hodge, Elizabeth “Bettie” Tutein, Mildred Navarro, Phyllis Vickern, Lomist Yasper, Claudette Rawlins Williams, Marilyn and Elizabeth Rawlins Williams, Dorene Petty, Audrey and Corlis James, Clariss Nixon, Ann James, Juanita Hansen Wiliams, Herbert Smith, Henry Francis, Walter A. Christian, Shadrack Gill, Joseph Rawlins, Randolph “Akio” Rawlins, Charles Rawlins, Alfonso Hansen, Almonzo Hansen, Emelda Thomas, Egar Iles, Ruth Iles, Anderson and Helen Stanley, Margret Claxton, Leona Williams, Evelyn Miranda, Eleanor Brathwaite and Margret Gibbs; as well as other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
A viewing will take place at 9 a.m. followed by funeral services at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 16, at Friedensfeld Moravian Church. Interment will take place at Friedensfeld Moravian Cemetery.
