Teen Dies in Swimming Accident

A 15-year-old boy died Monday afternoon while diving with his friends off the Frederiksted Pier.

According to the V.I. Police Department, the incident took place at about 3:30 p.m. Officers said several minors were diving off the small dock at the Frederiksted Pier when one had to be pulled from the water and given CPR.

The minors told police they were all jumping off the small dock when the victim jumped in and had trouble coming back to the surface. The friends told police the boy came up to the surface twice and did not come up again. Two adult swimmers attempted to rescue him and the minor was pulled from the water by other residents in a boat, the police report said.

The victim, whose name was withheld under a department policy not to identify accident victims, was given CPR and attended to by firefighters, emergency medical technicians and police. The teen was pronounced dead by medical personnel.
