Heath Lecture Series to Present Symposia on Edward Wilmot Blyden March 22-23 Edward Wilmot Blyden, known as the father of Pan-Africanism, will be the focus of the University of the Virgin Islands 2012 Alfred O. Heath Distinguished Lecture Series. In recognition of the centennial of Blyden’s death, the lecture series will feature symposia on “The Life and Accomplishments of Edward Wilmot Blyden.” Sessions will be held at UVI’s Reichhold Center for the Arts on St. Thomas on Thursday, March 22, and at the Great Hall on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix on Friday, March 23. Both events are free and begin at 6 p.m.
Blyden was born a free man in 1832 on St. Thomas in the pre-emancipation Danish West Indies. Denied entry into Rutgers University, in 1850 Blyden repatriated to Liberia, in West Africa, where he challenged the universal notion of white supremacy, asserted the equality of African people, aimed to eliminate the black inferiority complex and was a life-long champion of the race. Edward Wilmot Blyden Essay Contest Open to All UVI Students All UVI students are invited to participate in an Edward Wilmot Blyden Essay Contest. Participating students will attend one of the symposium sessions, fill in official entry forms available at the symposium and from UVI professors, and compose and submit an essay of 750 to 1000 words by April 13. UVI Student Radio Program Debuts on Radio One A new, student produced radio program titled “Voice of the University” debuted on Wednesday, March 21, on radio station WVWI-Radio One. The program features information on UVI events and programs. Interviews and sound clips from recent UVI events and activities are included. The program will air twice a week, from 2-3 p.m., on Wednesdays and Fridays. Radio One is found at AM 1000. 11th Annual UVI Queen Mary Walk/Run Slated for March 23; Applications Available The University of the Virgin Islands will host the 11th Annual Queen Mary Highway Walk/Run on Friday, March 23, in celebration of its Golden Jubilee 50th anniversary. The course for the Walk/Run will start at Sunshine Mall and end at UVI’s Albert A. Sheen Campus. Pre-registration for this event begins on March 1 and ends on March 22. The first 100 pre-registered participants are guaranteed a commemorative T-shirt. Transportation will be provided. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers. Psychology Honor Society to Induct 23 Students at UVI The University of the Virgin Islands Chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, will induct 23 students in ceremonies set for March 29, on St. Thomas and April 12, on St. Croix.
Twelve individuals – nine undergraduate and three graduate students – will be inducted in a ceremony at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 29, in Chase Auditorium (Business 110) on the St. Thomas campus. Another 11 students – five undergraduate and six graduate students – will be inducted at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, on UVI’s Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.

Lamkin Schedules Final Concert As Director of the UVI Jazz Ensemble on March 24 Music Professor Martin Lamkin will conduct his final concert as director of the UVI Jazz Ensemble at 8 p.m. on March 24, in the UVI Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. The performance is free of charge and will feature present Jazz Ensemble members as well as those from previous years. Lamkin has been director of the UVI Jazz Ensemble for 26 years.
Public Invited to Spring Research Symposium on St. Croix March 24 The Virgin Islands public is invited to the University of the Virgin Islands’ Tenth Annual Spring Research Symposium, set for 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, March 24. The symposium will take place in the Great Hall in the North West Wing of the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Admission is free for the event which is part of the University’s ongoing Golden Jubilee celebration.

SBDC to Host Skills Discovery Workshop on March 24 The Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center (VI SBDC) in conjunction with Rare Earth Studio, Inc. located in historic Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas will conduct a two-hour Skills Discovery Workshop from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and again from 1:30 -3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 24.
The workshop is designed for participants to learn about the many facets of the lucrative fine jewelry industry, and other creative expressions. The experience provides an opportunity to self-test to evaluate potential skills that may reveal a talent for learning how to become generationally self-sustaining, with the possibilities of owning your own business. New VI-EPSCoR Lab at UVI to Open on Monday, March 26 The Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) and the University of the Virgin Islands’ Center for Marine and Environmental Studies will host a grand opening of the University’s new Environmental Analysis Laboratory at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 26, at the former UVI Accounting Building, Faculty East, on the St. Thomas campus.
The lab will serve the growing needs of the territory and the region, offering research services for specialized environmental analyses, including marine and freshwater quality testing, microbiological analyses, and toxicological and other chemical analyses related to environmental health and quality. It will significantly improve the capacity of Virgin Islands scientists and students to conduct more rigorous and highly complex laboratory-based research. It will also provide office and laboratory space for faculty, staff and graduate research personnel.

CELL Slates March 27-28 Presentations on Ancient Egyptian Medicine UVI’s Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center will feature two evenings of presentations on the origin, foundation and fundamentals of the medical and healing practices of the physicians of ancient Egypt. The presentation is titled “Ancient Egyptian Medicine: The Psycho-Spiritual Basis of Human Well-Being.” It will be offered in two sessions, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27, and Wednesday, March 28. The workshop will be held at the Melvin Evans Center on the St. Croix Campus and will be avail via videoconference at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus.
The presentation will provide a unique perspective on the origins, foundations and fundamentals of the medical and healing practices of Ancient Egyptian physicians. It will briefly examine the healing practices of the Ancient Egyptians and shed light on the implications for human health and wellbeing in today’s world.
SBDC to Offer Free ‘Women in Business Forum" on St. Thomas, St. Croix The VI Small Business Development Center (VI SBDC) will present a "Women in Business Forum” on Wednesday, March 28, SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas and on Thursday, March 29, at the Virgin Islands Cardiac Center on St. Croix. Both sessions will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is free.
The forum is designed for aspiring and new business owners. It will feature a panel of women business owners who will answer questions from the audience. Women who have considered going into business for themselves and who have questions about the process are encouraged to participate.

Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition Set on St. Thomas for March 31 The Queen’s Committee of the UVI Student Government Association will present the 32nd annual Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, at the Reichhold Center for the Arts on the St. Thomas campus. The theme is “Past Meets the Present.” Tickets – $15 for UVI students, $20 general admission and $25 at the door – are available at UVI Bookstores on St. Croix and St. Thomas. Queen’s Tea Party Reception and Fundraiser Planned for March 31 A “Pre-Miss UVI Ambassadorial Queen’s Tea Party Reception” has been added to the University’s Golden Jubilee event schedule. The tea party reception and associated fundraiser is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, at the President’s Guest House on UVI’s St. Thomas campus.
The event, organized by the Miss UVI 2011-2012 Queen’s Club and Miss UVI Daniella Henry, is designed to honor past queens for their commitment and dedication as ambassadors who contributed to the growth and development of the institution since its founding in 1962.
A special guest appearance is planned by Ashleigh Taylor, the reigning Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame. Taylor is also Miss Tennessee State University.
The Tea Party will also serve as a fundraiser for the Miss UVI 2012-2013 Fund. The fund will provide UVI’s 2011-2012 Queen with a stipend for professional attire and general support for her participation in the 2012 National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Competition. The national competition provides contestants with the opportunity for personal growth and networking.

UVI Employee Service Awards Set April 10 on St. Croix, April 12 on St. Thomas UVI’s 38th Annual Employee Service Awards ceremonies are scheduled for Tuesday, April 10, at the Great Hall on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix and Thursday, April 12, at the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus.
The 2012 theme, in this Golden Jubilee year, is “Honoring Our Past – Creating Our Future.” The ceremonies will begin at 12:30 p.m. on both campuses and will include a buffet style lunch. A list of award recipients and additional information was shared with employees via email by the Human Resources Office. The deadline for submitting nominations for Employee of the Year 2012 is Wednesday, March 28. The deadline for submitting Service Awards Testimonials is Friday, March 30.
CLEP Test Dates Set on St. Thomas Campus Students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the spring 2012 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. CLEP tests will be administered on April 11 and 17, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123). Students can register for the test at the Office of Access and Enrollment Services’ front desk, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center.
Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on the test day with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver’s license, state or federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship.
The cost associated with CLEP is $77 (payable to College Board) per test and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). Payment must be made in the form of check, money order, or credit card. Cash will not be accepted. Students can e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org for additional information.

UVI Looking for Historic UVI Photos for Golden Jubilee Publication UVI is seeking historic photos from alumni, faculty, students and the general public for a book that will celebrate the University’s 50th Golden Jubilee. Examples would be photos from sporting events, class activities, dormitories and queen contests. Early photos from the 1960s through 1980s are especially needed. Clearly labeled originals should be brought to the UVI Public Relations Office, Room 229 of the Administration and Conference Center, on the St. Thomas campus, and to The Caribbean Writer office, on the St. Croix campus.
