Catch the largest dolphin (mahi-mahi) over 55-pounds and win $25,000. That’s the top prize in the Virgin Islands Game Fishing Club’s 2012 Dolphin Derby sponsored by Budget Car & Truck Rental, set for April 15. Also, cash prizes will be awarded to anglers who catch the next nine largest dolphin by weight. Ties in weight will be broken by length. The Best Boat award will be given to the vessel with the most dolphin by weight.
“This is one of the best tournaments all year, lots of local participation and lots of dolphin at the weigh-in,” said tournament director Kelvin Bailey Jr. “The weigh-in is exciting and everyone should come watch at American Yacht Harbor at 4 p.m. on April 15.”
Last year, 106 anglers aboard 25 boats reeled in a total of 73 dolphin. St. Thomas’ John Rose caught the two heaviest fish, which weighed 36.41-pounds and 33.88-pounds.
Register for the tournament at the Virgin Islands Game Fishing Club in Red Hook on Friday April 13 starts at 6:30 p.m. The fee is $250 for member boats with $50 for an extra rod and $300 for non-members with $60 for an extra rod. The captain’s meeting will follow registration. Fishing begins with lines in the water at 6 a.m. on April 15.
