Carnival Poster Contest Announced

With the 60th anniversary of Carnival on St. Thomas fast approaching, the Tourism Department set March 2 as the deadline for entries in its Carnival poster contest. In their posters, students ages 14 to 18 must portray what Carnival means to them.

“The 60th Anniversary of V.I. Carnival is a milestone in Virgin Islands cultural history,” said Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson Doty in a press release. “We are asking our schools to help commemorate this important occasion by participating in the contest, allowing students to artistically communicate the meaning of Carnival.”

Schools interested in participating should contact the Tourism Department for contest guidelines and entry forms. Each school must select one finalist from their school.

The entries from each school will then be reviewed by a panel of three judges comprised of representatives from the Virgin Islands art community.

The contest winner will receive a $500 savings bond and the winning artwork will be used by the Tourism Department to help promote Carnival.

Additionally, the winning school will be awarded $500 for use by their art department.

Finalists from each school will receive a gift bag from the Tourism Department and their artwork will be on public display at the department’s offices. All participating students will receive a “Tourism is Me” t-shirt compliments of the Tourism Department.

The poster contest is one of a variety of initiatives Tourism is implementing this year to promote the 60th Anniversary of Carnival both locally and abroad.

For more information, and to sign up for the contest call 774-8784 on St. Thomas/St. John or 772-0357 on St. Croix.
