The St. Croix Yacht Club Committee announced Wednesday that the annual St. Croix International Regatta will not be held this year because of the recent economic developments on the big island.
According to Yacht Club manager Matt Tove, they were unable to get anybody to sponsor the 2012 event, hinting at Hovensa’s closure.
“The Hovensa closure set the climate for our lack of getting anybody to sponsor the event this year,” Tove said.
2012 would have marked the 20th anniversary of the annual St. Croix Yacht Club event begun in 1992.
He referred to the regatta as “a break-even event,” noting that it wasn’t a moneymaker.
“We’re sorry to pull out of the event, but it’s better to do it than operating on a loss.”
Tove said only three participants had registered for the March event and they had all been contacted about the cancellation.
Despite the disappointment, Tove did say that the same committee is working hard to plan the 2013 event. The committee has even developed a new course for next year so they can attract new racers and cruisers.
