The 13th annual Love City Triathlon, scheduled for Sept. 4 has been canceled, organizers said.
“It has been a difficult decision to make,” organizing committee member Jude Woodcock said.
However, she said the event may be scheduled for a later date, but any such plans are up in the air.
Even if this year’s race doesn’t eventually happen, the organizers plan to hold the triathlon next year, Woodcock said.
“It’s such a fixture on St. John,” she said.
The St. John Landsharks, which hosts the triathlon, called off this year’s event because a number of the key members of the race committee have been or will be off- island this year. For this reason, Woodcock said the Landsharks felt they were not able to provide a quality race.
Some of those key organizers have also suffered burnout. Woodcock said that the committee especially needs help the day of the race.
“We need new people to step up to the plate,” Woodcock said.
She said that many members of the organizing committee started the race so they could participate, but the Love City Triathlon has grown so much that instead of swimming, bicycling and running, they have to work at the event.
Woodcock urged people to participate in the group’s Turkey Day 5K on Thanksgiving and the Reindeer Ramble in December.
