Emancipation 2011 Activities Set for July 3

St. Croix will celebrate the 163rd anniversary of the July 3, 1848, Emancipation in the territory all day Sunday, beginning with a 5 a.m. walk from Ft. Christiansvaern in Christiansted to Fort Frederik in Frederiksted. Sen. Terrence "Positive" Nelson leads the march every year. Everyone is invited. It is a long, slow walk, so those who arrive after 5 a.m. may join the procession along the way.
At noon, the St. Patrick School Alumni will hold a food sale in Buddhoe Park. From 3-6 p.m., the V.I. Elections Office will be holding a voter registration drive by the Eliza McBean Clock Tower between Buddhoe Park and the waterfront.
Starting at 4 p.m., the History, Culture and Tradition Foundation’s Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow Committee will hold an Emancipation ceremony with speakers discussing the history leading up to emancipation and since. Call 277-7485 for more information.
