Governor John P. de Jongh Jr. has proclaimed the weekend of March 5-6, as International Women’s Weekend, and March 6, asInternational Women’s Day in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This year’s centennial celebration features the theme: “Women Creating a Safe World,” recognizing women’s contributions to their communities, as well as the changing female role in society.
We acknowledge strides made by women in classrooms, boardrooms, courtrooms, political arenas, the military, and in homes and communities. This international initiative celebrates the achievements of women, past and present, and underscores the foundation in place for future generations.
In observance of these designations, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and raise awareness on their collective achievements. These efforts include political rallies, business conferences, government activities, networking events, as well as local craft markets, theatrical performances, fashion parades and more.
The first International Women’s Day events took place in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland in 1911 and were attended by over one million people. Today, 100 years later, this designated day has become a global phenomena celebrated throughout many countries and is an official holiday in approximately 25 countries including Afghanistan, Russia, Ukraine, Vietnam and Zambia.
