Human Services Graduates Non-profit Leaders

The Department of Human Services will bring to conclusion a 12-week training session for non-profit managers, directors and boards of directors’ members from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14, at the Sugar Estate Head Start Complex. As a part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA), the Tuesday ceremony will follow a combined session to include participants on all three islands. This final training will focus on case studies for critical thinking and effective management. It will afford participants an opportunity to network and share their experiences and the benefits of the weekly sessions.

The training session started in September and was held weekly on St. Thomas and St. Croix. Representatives from 77 non-profit agencies participated in the three-hour sessions, which focused on management and supervision skills as well as methodology and best legal practices. Last week 28 non-profit directors and senior staff members territory-wide took advantage of a DHS training session administered by Christine Less, the associate dean of executive education at the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government.
In November, 89 participants representing 64 organizations had participated in Human Services’ training for non-profit and faith-based board of directors with presenter Jill Schumann, who serves as the president and CEO of Lutheran Services in America and who was recently named to the Nonprofit Times “Power & Influence Top 50” list for the eighth year in a row.
