V.I. Answer Desk: Lovers Lane in a Funk (Updated)

Source reader Julie Evert wants to know: "After the millions of dollars spent on the new road, including pipes, why does it stink from sewage at the Lovers Lane intersection?"

Stella Saunders, Waste Management Authority communications manager, looked into the problem. There is a WMA pump station where Lovers Lane meets Long Bay Road, and she found the station needed to be deodorized.

Because the lines leading to the station are gravity fed, the flow lays dormant in the lines during the off-peak periods. Once the flow within the lines pick up, the odorous gases are released.

To alleviate this problem, the pump station was deodorized.
