Chicken Hawks Roll over Pirates, 62-0

Hawks running back Omar Fernandez rushed for two touchdowns.Quarterback Shaquille Richardson passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Charlotte Amalie Chicken Hawks rolled over the St. Croix Private Schools Pirates, 62-0, in just 30 minutes of football Saturday night at the Educational Complex.
The game was called at the half due to the 40-point mercy rule. It is the second week in a row that the Pirates have suffered such lopsided losses, but throughout both contests they played hard to the final whistle.
The Chicken Hawks jumped on the Pirates from the opening whistle as Richardson connected with wide receiver Javier Lima in the middle of the field for a 35-yard touchdown pass.
From there, the rout was on.
On their next possession, running back Omar Fernandez ran in the first of his two rushing touchdowns of the night to quickly extend the lead to 16-0.
The score would be 32-0 at the end of the first quarter after the Hawks recovered a fumbled punt attempt and took it in for their fourth touchdown of the opening stanza.
It was the Cursin Hansen show at the start of the second quarter for the Hawks. After a 35-yard scamper around the left end was called back for an illegal block in the back, the same play was called for the wide receiver, and this time he went 25 yards to the Pirates’ 11-yard line.
Hansen’s number was called again for the same play, this time to the right side, and he ran it in almost untouched for the score—and a 40-0 Hawks lead after the successful extra-point conversion.
After another Pirates turnover gave the ball back to the Hawks, their defense looked liked they would force the Hawks to punt the ball for the first time in the game with the Hawks facing a fourth and two. That was not to be, however, as Richardson took the snap, dropped back and hit Hansen for 33 yards and the score.
Defensive back Brandon Wadsworth then picked off Pirates quarterback Christopher Houze on the Pirates next possession and took it to the house for a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown and a 54-0 lead after the extra point.
The Pirates would be victims of another interception return for a touchdown when on their next possession Fernandez got the pick this time and ran it back some 35 yard for the final touchdown of the game, which gave his team a 62-0 lead.
The Pirates showed some upside on their final play of the game when Hauze connected with wide receiver Carlos Arrington deep over the middle for a 45-yard gain with seconds left in the half. Harrington, however, would be dropped almost immediately by a Hawks defense that was bent on preserving the shutout.
“We came over here not knowing what, really, to expect having not seen this team before” said Hawks head coach Francisco Jarvis. “We had a horrible week of practice because of all the rain, so we decided to play our game and not worry about what the other team was doing,” Jarvis concluded.
For the Pirates it was another blowout loss, but with many players never having played football before suiting up this season, it was to be expected against some of the top V.I. high school football teams. The players, however, displayed tremendous heart and will definitely improve as the season progresses.
