Lionel Alfredo Barnes, Sr. Dead at 77

Lionel Alfredo Barnes Sr.Lionel Alfredo Barnes Sr., also known as "Lydie” or “Lydie Barnes," of Mon Bijou died on May 28, at Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital. He was 77 years old.

He is survived by his spouse, Norma Barnes; children: Gwendolyn Barnes McGee, Letticia Barnes, Lionel Barnes Jr., Lloyd Barnes, Stephanie Barnes, Violet Barnes Howell, Geralyn Weber, Beverly Nicholson-Doty, Mona Barnes, Dexter Barnes, Alicia Barnes and Anthony Barnes; stepchildren: Sheila Celestin, Rosemond Creighton and Carlyn Lawrence; grandchildren: Nile James, Latifa Mack, Jamila Russell, Kwasi Barnes, Harold Mial III, Tiffany Thompson, Morgan Howell, Ashli Iles, Paris Nicholson III, Jermayne Barnes, Sherise Barnes, Anthony Barnes Jr., Nia Sylvester, Makaila Sackey, Tramaine Creighton, Ezra Celestin, Ezrina Celestin, Davidson Lawrence and Carlina Lawrence; and great-grandchildren: Shaynifa Petersen, La’Shay Petersen, Luritz Thompson III, Shashamani Smith, Nykiia Barnes, Ja’den Harding, Jynel Thompson, Ja’nae Thompson, Damain thompson Jr., Jaeden Gray, Z’Kai Heyliger, David lawrence, Aniya Celestin, Shayne Celestin and Shawn Celestin. He is also survived by brothers: Bernard Barnes, Rupert Barnes, Vernon Barnes, Milton Barnes and Dennis Barnes; sisters: Loreen Barnes and Cleopha Isaac; sons-in-law: Thomas McGee, Arthur Howell, James Weber III, Randall Doty, Ezra Celestin and Cornell Creighton; daughter-in-law, Denise Simmonds-Barnes; special friends: the family of Leopold ‘Polo’ Gittens Sr., Irving Francis, Joseph Bruce, Leslie Meyers, Vernal Philpot Joseph and Herman Heywood Jr.; special cousines: Arthur Powell and the extended Powell family; and other cousins, nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.
There will be a viewing at 10 a.m. and a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Interment will follow at Frederiksted Cemetery.
