A 54-year-old inmate at Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility on St. Croix was found dead in his cell Sunday morning.
Hector Cuencas, who lived on St. Croix, was found unresponsive in his cell about 7:10 a.m. during a routine morning inspection, according to a news release from the V.I. Bureau of Corrections.
Corrections officials called 911 to request an ambulance, which arrived at the facility about 7:20 a.m., according to the report.
Following a thorough examination by emergency-medical technicians, Cuencas was transported to Juan F. Louis Hospital for further treatment. He was pronounced dead on arrival about 8:10 a.m.
He was admitted to the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility Detention Center on Oct 30 on a probation violation.
The investigation into Cuencas’ death is ongoing and will include an autopsy to determine the cause of his death.
Acting Corrections Director Julius Wilson expressed sadness at the report.
