Vikings Conquer Yankees 9-6 in 'Tight Shoes' Jackson AA Baseball

June 15, 2009 — The Vikings knocked off the Yankees 9-6 Sunday in a time-shortened six-inning contest to continue their dominant stance atop the Raphael "Tight Shoes" Jackson Double A Baseball League at the D.C. Canegata Ballpark.
The powerful Vikings have proven this season that the road to the championship runs right through them, and they will be a hard road to traverse.
After the Yankees failed to score in the top of the first inning, the Vikings got on the board in their half of the inning with four runs on an RBI triple by Juan Santana, an RBI single by Arthur Canaii and two unearned runs.
The Yankees got on board in the top of the second with two unearned run to close the gap to 4-2. The Vikings responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to five runs at 7-2 after two completed innings.
A wild pitch in the top of the third gave the Yankees one run and they then trailed 7-3 after three innings as the Vikings came up empty in the bottom of the inning.
After a scoreless fourth, the Yankees crept one run closer at 7-4 in the top of the fifth inning when they plated one run on Carlos Morales' RBI sacrifice fly. The Vikings responded with two runs on a mighty two-run blast off the bat of Canaii over the right-field fence extended their lead to five runs at 9-4 after five completed innings.
With the allotted time limit for the game just about gone, the Yankees came to bat in the top of the sixth inning knowing that it would be their last chance to get back in the game. They managed to plate two unearned runs, but it was too little, too late, and they went down in defeat 9-6.
Juan V. Santana got the win on the hill for the winners, while Malcolm McGregor got the loss for the Yankees. Top batters for the Vikings were Canaii, 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, and Santana, 3 for 3 with two RBIs. For the Yankees, Shakeel Newton went 2 for 3 and Morales went 1 for 2 with an RBI.
