Plaskett West Wins St. Croix 9-10 Little League Championship

June 8, 2009 — The Elmo Plaskett West 9-10 All-Stars defeated the East 7-1 Sunday at the Renholdt Jackson Sport Complex to win the right to represent St. Croix next weekend in the V.I. Little League baseball tournament against St. Thomas at the D.C. Canegata Ballpark.
The West won the final two games of the series after dropping the opener on Friday by 10 runs.
"All year we have played like this in the league," said West Manager Markie Christian. "One day a team will blow us out and we would come back and blow them out the next day. So what happened on Friday was nothing new. The kids were just a little nervous on Friday, but I was confident once they settled down we would win this."
The West starting pitcher, Marquis Christian, was dominant on the mound as he struck out nine batters while allowing just two hits in leading his team to the series-clinching victory. Aldemar Santos got the loss for the East.
Batting first, the West scored all the runs they would need in the top of the first inning when they plated three runs on a two-run double by Michael Bynoe and an unearned run to take the lead for good. They then turned things over to Christian, who totally dominated the East batters in the early going.
After a scoreless second, the West picked up an unearned run in the top of the third to extend their lead to four runs at 4-0. The East managed their only run of the game in the bottom of the inning on Akkido Lindquist's RBI single to trail 4-1 after three completed innings.
The West then went on to add an unearned run in the fifth and two more in the top of the sixth to complete the scoring for the game with a final score of 7-1.
Top batters for the West were Bynoe, 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Jackwan Sweeney, 1 for 2. For the East little leaguers, Lindquist went 1 for 2 with an RBI, and Santos went 1 for 3.
