Animal Welfare Center Plans Two 'Shop for the Shelter' Events

March 11, 2009 – The St. Croix Animal Welfare Center alerts the public to two upcoming 'Shop for the Shelter' events to help the homeless dogs and cats of St. Croix.
Staff, volunteers and animals will be present at events on March 21 from 9:30 to 4 p.m. at Cost U Less and again on April 4 from 8:30 to 4 p.m. at Gallows Bay Hardware. AWC is asking shoppers to add a much-needed item from AWC's "wish list" to their shopping basket. Items directly benefit shelter operations and the dogs and cats in AWC's care.
In addition, some of AWC's great animals will be on site at each event seeking a new home and family. Adoption fees are $60 and cover vaccines, dewormer, health check, spay/neuter surgery and the territory's mandatory licensing tag for dogs.
"Although partially supported by the Virgin Islands government for the essential community service of animal control, AWC must fundraise to meet most operational needs," said communications director Gretchen Sherrill. "Shop for the Shelter is a great event because shoppers can choose which items to donate and see exactly how the animals benefit from their gift–every gift, no matter how small, makes a big difference."
AWC is also conducting a membership drive, so shoppers can pick up membership applications as well. The fees are $35 for individuals and tiered for businesses with three corporate levels: gold-$500, silver-$250 and bronze-$100. St. Croix AWC is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit and donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
Volunteers for this and other AWC outreach initiatives are needed. To help, call 778-1650, e-mail info@stcroixawc.org or visit online at StCroixAWC.org.
Wish List: small safe, industrial trash cans with lids, rolling industrial mop buckets with mops, Pedigree dog food, Whiskas cat food, water and food bowls (metal), dog and cat treats, containers for dry food storage, sponges, mops, brooms, hand sanitizer, paper towels, toilet paper, Fixaflat, buckets, bug spray, abrasive scrubbers, Brillo pads, sponges, spray pumps (garden type for kennel floors), dish soap, bleach, Pinesol, antibacterial hand soap, Fantastic bleach spray, deck brushes, garbage bags, laundry detergent, fabric softener, clothes pins, squeegees, garden rakes, pressure washer, work gloves, dog shampoos, collars, leashes and office supplies (pens, cardstock, office paper, dry erase markers, paper clips, scissors, rubber bands, scotch tape).
