Dear Source:
We live in Connecticut, but own a condo at Club St Croix. We spend about ten weeks a year on the island. We love to walk about three miles a day, but are saddened by the amount of trash we see discarded on the side of the road. This not only demonstrates the lack of respect and pride people have in their homes, but also leaves a bad taste in the mouths of guests and tourists that spend money on the island and help prop up the local economy.
Why are deposits on bottles not talked about more on the island? This is truly an idea that works across the continent. If someone wants to throw a five-cent bottle out the window of his car, I'm sure there will be someone that will pick it up for the refund. This would go a great distance to reducing that roadside blight, and force some to be responsible and deal with their own trash. Maybe if they don't throw the bottle out, they may not throw the rest of the lunch bag out either.
This is a little step. We can go the distance if we take one step at a time.
